DIY All-Natural Linen Spray

One of the best smells in the world is fresh laundry: the crisp scent of cotton, the clean smell of linen. The fabric’s soft texture invites infinite snuggles.

However, sometimes linens sit in the closet for a long time. For example, flannel sheets are only used in the Winter and holiday towels aren’t pulled out until November or December. In the mean time, they collect dust and grow stagnant, even though they are clean. Which means they produce a stale smell when you finally pull them out of the closet.

You’re ready to use them but they aren’t ready to be used. Instead of re-washing them (although you certainly could), why not freshen up your linens with a quick linen spray?

It will make them smell nice, eliminate germs, and even kill those pesky dust mites. What’s not to love about a linen spray who acts like a superhero? (Did I mention that you an even use it one your kid’s stuffed animals?!)

What is Linen Spray?

A linen spray is a fabric-safe liquid that you spritz on stale linens to refresh them. It eliminates unwanted smells, sanitizes away dust mites, and adds a pleasant smell.

This is safe for use on sheets, towels, and clothing, as well as rugs, carpets, furniture, pillows, and even stuffed animals.

You can create your own linen spray with a few simple, natural ingredients.

  • Vinegar is an all-natural cleaner.
  • Essential oils like eucalyptus can kill and deter dust mites. (Dust mites are microscopic animals that live in fabrics, and their feces are allergenic to many people. They can only be killed by extremely hot water or a few types of essential oils.)
  • Tea tree essential oil is antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. You definitely want to include this in your linen spray!
  • Lavender and peppermint are refreshing, clean scents.

Linen Spray Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup water
1 cup white vinegar
8 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil
8 drops of Tea tree essential oil
8 drops of Lavendar essential oil
8 drops of Peppermint essential oil
Spray bottle

Directions:

  1. Pour the vinegar into the spray bottle.
  2. Add the essential oils to the vinegar, and gently swirl to emulsify.
  3. Add the water, and gently shake to combine all ingredients.

Don’t forget to label your bottle as Linen Spray! It’s also helpful to tape the recipe to the bottle so you know exactly how to make another batch when this one is all gone.

How to use a Linen Spray

Directions: Spray.

That’s the simplified version, but it really is that easy!

As always, spot test the spray on a small area to ensure that it does not discolor your fabric. Then, gently mist the linen spray over all of the fabric.

Be sure that your bottle isn’t squirting excessive amounts of liquid. You’re going for a light mist instead of heavy water droplets.

Allow a few minutes to dry before making your bed, folding your towels, or sitting on the furniture.

Because this recipe is non-toxic, your kids can immediately play with their stuffed animals and your dogs can get back to an afternoon nap on their dog bed.

Caution: Eucalyptus can be poisonous to house pets in large doses, but the oil is very diluted in this recipe and should not pose any health risks to your pets. If you’re concerned about the toxicity, eliminate eucalyptus from this recipe. The tea tree oil will still provide extreme cleaning benefits!
